Ready to Learn
Tips to establish routinesOur Year 7 students have settled into their new routines remarkably well. However, we understand that the transition from primary school to secondary school can feel like a big leap—not only for your child but for you as a parent too.
Going from knowing everyone and everything to navigating new relationships and supporting your child’s growing independence can bring mixed emotions.
The science of learning tells us that we learn what we pay attention to. However, it can be hard for a boy to pay attention when the spaces, the people and the subjects are all new and he is preoccupied with things like whether he has packed his sports gear for training.
Establish routines at home
At our recent Ready to Learn workshop for Year 7 parents, we discussed the importance of establishing routines at home. These simple routines can help ease the mental load, reduce stress, and ensure things run more smoothly.
Routines such as printing out timetables and placing them in a visible spot, packing school bags the night before, setting regular times for homework, and having a weekly family check-in can make a world of difference.
Though these actions might seem small, they can have a big impact on how your child experiences each week.
