Podium finish at Sailing Nationals

During the recent mid-year winter holidays, BGS Sailing represented Victoria at the Australian School Teams Sailing National Championships, which were hosted by Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club (SA). Alongside fierce competition, for the duration of the multi-day regatta the conditions were indicative of winter sailing: inclement and inconstant – but, to reverse the famous quote, no skilled sailor was ever made in smooth waters.

After five gruelling days of sailing and weather, BGS was the only Victorian team to qualify for the Finals. Following an early defeat to the eventual overall winners (The Scots College), BGS won consecutive elimination finals, before finishing strongly with a series of stirring come-from-behind victories in the petite final in order to claim 3rd place on the national stage – a new record for BGS Sailing. In a display of the Tonners’ Spirit, this result proved to be the capstone of a terrific week and has earned BGS the right to represent Australia at the Interdominion Team Racing Championships, which will be held in Sydney during September.

BGS Sailing was represented commendably by Matty Goss (Captain; Year 12), Ollie van der Slot (Vice-Captain; Year 12), Pierre Giggins (Year 11), Will Bennett (Year 10), Dmitry Sorokin (Year 10), Kylan Thompson (Year 10), Leo Jansen (Year 9) and Aiden O’Connell (Year 8).

We sincerely thank our coaches James Provis (OB 2019) and Wallis Brewer – as well as the tremendous support of the BGS parents and families – for their commitment, energy and good sense of humour.

Go Tonners!
