New Gallipoli Lone Pine for BGS

Presented at Chapel was a new descendent sapling, which will be replanted as a continual reminder of the School’s connection to a spirit of service and sacrifice.

Remembrance Day marks the end of hostilities of the First World War, but it has come to represent a day for remembering all those who served and sacrificed. Like many boys’ schools, BGS has an intimate history with the war. From the Western front, to Gallipoli to Beersheba, Old Boys led, fought and were lost. At the Secondary School Remembrance Day Chapel Service, special guest Dr John Basarin OAM, of the Friends of Gallipoli, shared the story of the Battle of Lone Pine, and of how the tree has come to be a living memorial. The School has a descendant of the Gallipoli Lone Pine, which grows at the Junior School entrance. Another lone pine descendant was planted in the Rosstrevor, but was removed in 2021 due to old age.
