JS Orientation: Welcome to Wilson House

Welcome to BGS Junior School

The Brighton Grammar Junior School is designed to nurture and challenge boys in a dynamic, engaging environment that sets a strong foundation for their future learning. By understanding the unique ways in which boys learn, the curriculum has been specifically developed to meet their needs so that students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The positive School culture and strong sense of community create an atmosphere of belonging.  A single campus means older boys’ mentor younger students through a buddy program and coaching system that strengthens relationships. The safety, self-esteem and wellbeing of each boy is at the core of the Junior School. Mindfulness is practised daily in each class after lunch, allowing boys to reconnect and be ready for learning.  The benefits are improved focus and concentration, better emotional regulation, increased resilience, expanded empathy and social skills, reduction of stress and anxiety plus an enhanced self-awareness.

At the heart of the teaching approach is Explicit Instruction and Direct Modelling. These are central to the delivery of a knowledge-rich curriculum, ensuring that learning is clear, structured, and accessible to all boys. Through Explicit Instruction, learning objectives are outlined and students are guided step by step through new concepts. Direct Modelling allows the teacher to demonstrate the processes, skills, and knowledge that students are expected to master. This ensures that boys not only understand the “what” but also the “how” of learning, leading to deeper comprehension and stronger retention.

In the Junior School, we prioritise:

  • Engagement through active learning
  • Building strong foundations in English and Mathematics
  • Fostering curiosity and a love of learning
  • Positive Masculinity

We are a family-oriented School where parents, boys, and staff work together to create the best possible learning environment. There are many opportunities for parents to play an active and meaningful role in their son’s education, reinforcing the values and skills being developed in the classroom.

Brighton Grammar School places a strong emphasis on the development of core values of passion, respect, integrity and accountability. Through structured lessons, extracurricular activities, and a supportive pastoral care system, we aim to shape well-rounded young men who are prepared to contribute positively to society.

Junior Parents’ Group

The Parents’ Group for Junior School is known as the JPG. It provides a formal structure and support network for parents to participate in the activities and decision making processes of the School.

Involvement in the JPG is facilitated by a volunteer group of parents known as year-level representatives. These reps are fundamental to the sense of belonging and community spirit for which BGS is renowned. They arrange coffee mornings and other social gatherings, and communicate with you throughout the year about what is going on in your son’s year level.

The JPG warmly invites ALL parents to attend the regular JPG meetings and encourages parents to become involved and participate actively in the life of the School. All parents’ contributions DO make a difference!

Should you have any queries concerning the JPG or wish to find out any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the JPG Parent Liaison via email.
