Big Fella 2022
After a busy Saturday of APS sport at the start of March, the Year 12 cohort undertook a five-hour bus ride to Mount Bogong to attempt to reach the summit the following morning. With Big Fella postponed from the start of the year, the turnout of boys was indicative of the excitement the Year 12s have for the year ahead but also for what could be their last Brighton Grammar Outdoor Education experience. Sunday began with a 5.00am wake up but regardless the boys were eager to get hiking.
Climbing in House groups made the four to five-hour climb to the summit pass relatively quickly as we were able to reflect on the years and experiences gone by whilst also talking about expectations for the year ahead.
Although 70 kilometre winds meant we weren’t able to truly summit Mount Bogong, coming only 20 minutes from the peak and being able clear the trees and stand among the clouds was a truly satisfying experience. However, it was, in fact, all those who attended the camp making it to the top which was even more satisfying.
Big Fella was the perfect way to start what is sure to be a challenging year and proved to the boys, just as they had their mates to support them up the mountain, they are sure to have their mates to support them throughout the year.
